Perched on a hillside overlooking Mount Diablo, this 1959 house by architect Henry Hill was being marketed as a teardown when its new owners saw something worth saving. Framestudio restored and updated the house, improving comfort, energy efficiency and seismic performance while allowing Hill’s architecture to remain firmly in charge.
The original fireplaces were restored as focal points, while changes to the plan were purposeful and few. Removing a single partition opened the kitchen for cooking and gathering, while a broad sliding window wall connects the den directly to a new outdoor entertaining area.
A restrained palette of white oak, unglazed tile and natural finishes keeps the interiors warm and relaxed, allowing the architecture, landscape and remarkable views of Mount Diablo to do much of the talking.
